Why The Tourism Industry Is Worth Trillions (And How to Get Involved)

Everyone at some point in their lives has been part of contributing to the fastest growing industry in the world, tourism. Whether you’ve stayed in a hotel, hopped on a plane or paid to go on an eco-tourism tour, you’ve made the global tourism industry worth an estimated 2 trillion dollars.

It might seem shocking but tourism really does keep our global economy afloat and unless everyone wakes up tomorrow and decides they no longer want to go on holiday or visit a new town, chances are it’s going to remain the powerful entity that it is for a long time to come.

The industry’s size comes from society’s constant desire for things we don’t necessarily need but we desperately want. We don’t need to go on an expensive holiday each year but we probably will even though it will set us back months on our credit card repayments. If you’re looking for a change of scenery and a secure job, then here is how you can get involved with the tourism industry:

  1. Start a tourism company.

This is probably the most drastic and frankly lucrative way to be part of the tourism industry. If you happen to live near a tourist hub or even a thoroughfare for tourists, setting up a tour company could be quite easy

Especially if you know your own town or city and can provide tourists with something different like an added wine tour of the best bars in this area or fun historical facts about the town. Yes, it is a risk but with the tourism industry being as powerful as it is, surely it’s a risk worth taking?

  1. Work in the eco-tourism industry.

In recent years’ eco-tourism has been brought into the forefront of the tourism industry. With people becoming more and more concerned about the negative impacts of travel there has been an increase in environmentally sustainable tour groups and accommodation. Getting involved with this aspect of tourism might seem far-fetched now but in the years to come, it could really pay off!

Whether you decide to launch your own eco-tourism company or just want to start off with working for one, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about a growing industry.

  1. Become a travel writer/photographer.

Unless you’ve been living in the bush for the last five years you should have noticed how what used to be a pretty selective career has now become one of the easiest to get into – travel blogging.

This is a great option if you don’t really want to go from your regular job into full time tourism and if you have some hidden skills with words and a camera. It’s a relatively slow process but the payoff is worth it with some travel bloggers literally being paid to travel the world and write about it!

  1. Host people through Airbnb.

Airbnb is the way of the future, this accommodation and hosting platform allows you to be part of the industry without taking much risk. This is a great option if you happen to have a spare room, granny flat, apartment, house or even cubby house for rent. With more travellers picking Airbnb over traditional accommodation it is a relatively secure way to start investing in the tourism industry.

So, whether you’re seriously wondering whether a career change is right for you or just want to expand your cash flow options, the tourism industry is one that most people can get involved in with without too much risk. Once you’ve decided which option suits you best, get ready for a fun ride filled with new faces, funny stories and endless opportunities!
