Lawrence Sawmy: The multi-linguist passionate about Project Management

Published 1st June, 2018

For our latest Careers Success feature, we’re congratulating Lawrence Sawmy, who was recently offered an internship as a Junior Project Coordinator at Vivir Healthcare. We know you’ve earned it Lawrence!

Lawrence, all the way from Mauritius, came to us at Kaplan Business School (KBS) Melbourne to study our MBA, specialising in Project Management. A true global citizen, he’s studied and worked across Europe and Australia, and speaks fluent Spanish, French and English.

What brought Lawrence to Kaplan Business School Australia?

After three years as a teacher and seven years travelling the world, Lawrence decided it was the right time for a career change and going back to study. Lawrence knew he wanted to study in Australia because of the flexibility, quality of education, and the industry opportunities available through KBS.

‘The MBA in which I’m enrolled in has been specifically designed to satisfy the constantly evolving job market, and highly motivates me with its career-relevant curriculum and content.’

Lawrence has seen immense professional growth through Careers Central and his academic internship

Lawrence, driven to launch his newfound career in Project Management, has been taking advantage of the many services available through our on-campus Careers Central.

‘I have attended KBS’ Careers Central workshops which include resume building, how to create a LinkedIn account, advice on job searching and learning about academic internships.

Through Careers Central job postings, I managed to gain casual employment as a bartender in a Melbourne CBD Hotel that has led me to other networking opportunities. I feel I have the experience and confidence to work alongside native English speakers.

As a Junior Project Coordinator at Vivir Healthcare, working 2 days a week goes very quickly and I try to utilise my time as much as I can, applying my project management skills in a constructive and strategic way.’

Lawrence is ambitious and has firm goals about where he wants to work and exactly what he wants to do once he graduates.

For Lawrence, it’s not enough to work for a company that is just generating profits; the company needs to be ethically and environmentally responsible.

‘I am interested to see where the company’s efforts are focused, and whether they give back to the community in some shape or form.

It is also important for me to know whether the company I will be working for takes reasonable efforts to play its part in taking care of the environment and not damaging it through its operations.’

Studying while working and adapting to a new city can be challenging. How has Lawrence coped with such competing demands?

‘The challenge I have is coping with the increasing amount of responsibilities and work while maintaining the expected of high standards. Because studying is my priority and I am also work part-time, it is can be challenging to operate under competing modes and give myself 100% both at KBS and at work.’

We know Lawrence has been working hard, and we’re very proud of his achievements! So, where to next?

‘I would be thrilled to work in Project Management within the Aviation or Tourism industry, or something related to sustainability like eco-tourism or aged care. I still think that the best is yet to come – Once I graduate and land my ‘dream job’, here in Australia, or overseas.’

Good luck, Lawrence. We are here to help you get that dream job!
