Intern of the Month: Vidhya (Debtor Reduction Solutions)
Earlier last week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Vidhya, a Mauritian student who is currently in the second trimester of her Bachelor of Business course at Kaplan Business School.
Doing what they do best, Careers Central have succeed once again in finding one of our students an internship relevant to their studies. This is Vidhya’s story.
What made you move to Australia from Mauritius?
Mauritius is a very small country with limited opportunities compared to Australia, especially for the career path I want to pursue. I would really love to get into accounting, particularly forensic accounting – and Australia is the best place to be for these career paths.
How are you finding the course?
Well, I love accounting, so naturally the degree is working out really well for me! I was really happy with the marks I got for my first trimester. The lecturers are great. They are very open. If you have any problems, they’re always ready to help you in any way they can.
You received some success with finding an internship, I hear!
Yeah I was actually placed in a debt collecting company by the name of DRS (Debtor Reduction Solutions).
The company is pretty small, and young – that being said, I got to learn a lot and gain opportunities, meet new people, and network with many talented coworkers. All in all, I’m really grateful to Kaplan and Careers Central for helping me find this amazing position.
Tell me about the company!
It’s a debt collecting agency, so we collected on behalf of other companies. I was helping her with admin and reception work, and I also got to work with an accountant. This was great for me as I am hoping to become a professional accountant one day myself.
As the company’s small, I was fortunate enough to be able to work alongside the director. There were 3 directors and as I was the only one interning, I built up a pretty close relationship with them.
Did you find the skills learnt on the job to be valuable?
Definitely, I’m relatively new to Australia. I only arrived last May, and that was my first official office work experience! It was important for me to learn how it really works in Australia and it really helped me build my portfolio for future work.
How has the internship helped with your classroom study, or vice versa?
Yeah definitely, now that I’ve had a lot of practical work experience, the theory I’m learning in class translates better. As I’ve already been exposed to the practical work and the environment, I can understand the lectures better and the material sinks in better.
What tips and advice?
Be patient. You have to be – just keep looking, don’t give up, and if you network properly the right opportunity will come at the right time.
“As a start up business In Commercial Debt Recovery, we were in a constant state of change, while our processes were being refined and honed. Having Vidhya work with us was a breath of fresh air! She was very flexible in her work, a fast learner and contributed to our meetings in a positive way, and also made valued suggestions when reviewing our procedures.”
