Update: Tuesday, 8 September
The Victorian Government has announced extended restrictions to control the spread of COVID-19. We have made the decision to extend our Melbourne campus closure for the remainder of Trimester 2 until Sunday, October 11. We will continue to review this closure in alignment with the latest Government announcements and advice. Trimester 2 classes began online on July 20 for Melbourne students and will continue for the remainder of the trimester. We encourage all our students in Melbourne to visit Study Melbourne’s coronavirus (COVID-19) support hub to access further assistance for international students.
Trimester 2 began on Monday 20 July and all of our support teams will be available both on-campus and online for the entire trimester. With the continued easing of restrictions nationwide, we’re delivering classes on campus and online in Trimester 2, with exception of Melbourne.
Please note that on-campus we have implemented a number of health and safety measures to ensure the safety of our community. It is vital we follow social distancing rules and hygiene practices in all our spaces, including strict maximum capacities allowed within our classrooms and on entire floors.
Whether you are studying online or on-campus, all students will still be able to visit their local campus to access computer labs, Wi-Fi and quiet spaces. They will also be able to consult with our student support staff such as our Student Experience Officers, Career Advisors, Student Counsellors, and our Academic Success Centre learning advisors.
Financial Hardship Fund update: All applications for the Financial Hardship Fund have now been assessed. We had initially budgeted for 1200 successful applicants but have since increased this to 1,293 students who have already received a $500 Mastercard voucher as well as an additional $750 off their tuition fees for Trimester 2. Travel Ban update: From 11:59pm AEST on Saturday 28 March 2020, all travellers arriving in Australia via air or seaports must undergo 14 days of isolation in the city of their arrival. The Australian Government will provide accommodation for the quarantine period. Please inform us if this situation is applicable to you.

Q: What is Kaplan Business School doing for Trimester 2?
Due to the ongoing social distancing rules imposed by state and federal governments in response to COVID-19, we will be delivering a mix of on-campus and online classes in Trimester 2. In deciding which subjects to offer on campus, we have prioritised those in which students are most likely to enrol in their first one or two trimesters since it is these students who generally require the greatest support by virtue of being new to higher education in Australia. Trimester 2 started on Monday 20 July and re-enrolments for current students are now closed.
Q: Why is a mix of on-campus and online classes being delivered in Trimester 2?
A: Currently the state and federal governments are recommending clear social distancing guidelines for indoor spaces. These guidelines limit the number of classes we can deliver on campus, as well as the number of students in each room to ensure our safety and wellbeing. This has resulted in a limited number of on-campus classes being available since we are legally restricted not only by the number of students we’re permitted to have in each classroom but also the maximum number we can have on the entire floor at any one time. It is vital that we follow all the precautions we’ve put in place on campus to ensure we keep the KBS community safe.
Q: Doesn’t my student visa restrict me from enrolling in too many online subjects?
A: Ordinarily yes. The federal government, however, and the higher education regulator, have made an exception in recognition of the once-in-a-generation changes that COVID-19 has imposed on countries all around the world, including Australia. This means if all your subjects this trimester are completed online, or if you exceed the one-third overall limit permissible for your course, you will no longer be in breach of your visa conditions.
Q: How will I know which classes are on campus and which are online?
A: When you enrol in your subjects via KHUB for Trimester 2, all on-campus and online classes will be shown in the same timetable. The way you can distinguish between them is by checking the top of the tile.
Q: I’m still facing financial difficulties. What should I do for Trimester 2?
A: As part of our $5m Financial Support Package, all eligible students who enrol in a full-time study load for Trimester 2 will receive $750 in temporary tuition relief. For those who received a successful outcome on their Financial Hardship Fund application, a further $750 will be automatically applied to your KHUB account.
We understand it’s been a very challenging period for many of our students, which is why it’s important if you have faced financial difficulties recently that you feel will impact your Trimester 2 enrolment, that you please discuss your situation with your local Student Experience team who can explore further options to help you.
We strongly encourage all students not to use any third-party payment providers when enrolling in their subjects for Trimester 2.
Q: Can I still visit the campus?
A: With the exception of Melbourne, all our campuses are open. You are able to access computer labs, Wi-Fi and quiet spaces at each of our locations, as well as our student support staff such as our Student Experience Officers and our Academic Success Centre learning advisors. Whether you’re studying online or face-to-face, all our channels of support will still be available to students.
For Trimester 2, our opening times have extended from 8am – 8:15pm, Monday to Thursday, and 9am – 5pm on Friday. Please check in with your local Student Experience team, as opening times may differ between campuses.
Q: Will I be able to complete an academic internship in Trimester 2?
A: Yes. Our host companies will be offering either workplace-based internships where it’s safe to do so or, in the case of virtual internships, where you’re able to work from home. Whether you complete your internship physically or virtually is dependent on a variety of factors. The health and safety of students is our priority, which will ultimately determine whether you complete your internship in the workplace or virtually. Our Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Manager, Kerri Watton, is available for ongoing support and guidance. She will continue to actively provide this support on a weekly basis and you can discuss your options further by speaking with our Careers Central team at firstname.lastname@example.org
Q: I’m currently overseas and unable to return to Australia for the start of Trimester 2 due to travel restrictions. What do I do?
A: Please get in touch with your local Student Experience team who are here to support you. Depending on your circumstances, we can suggest a number of options you may find appealing for the upcoming trimester, including the option to study online which is available for all subjects offered in Trimester 2. Whatever the situation, we can help ensure your studies are not disrupted.
Q: I’m not feeling well and think I may have COVID-19. What do I do?
A: If you have any of the symptoms on this list, or you feel you may have been exposed to COVID-19 and as such are concerned about your health, please contact your local health professional immediately or call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222 to receive a health assessment by a registered nurse. Further information is also available at www.health.gov.au.
Q: I’ve never studied online before. Is it more difficult? How do I approach it?
A: Studying online is similar to studying on campus. To ensure you encounter as little inconvenience as possible, the on-campus classes in which you enrol will be delivered online at the same time and by the same lecturers. Your subject materials will be available via MyKBS, as is presently the case, and you’ll even find engaging online features such as whiteboards, break-out rooms and polls. The main difference you’ll experience is that, rather than sitting in a classroom, you’ll instead be sitting in a Zoom room. You’ll still be able to interact with your lecturer and with your fellow students. To help you adjust to this new learning experience with greater ease, we recommend you view the 'Studying Online at Kaplan Business School' video which can be found on the homepage of MyKBS.
Q: If I study with KBS online, will I encounter any restrictions?
A: It depends on the country in which you’re based. Internet restrictions, for example, may make accessing some of the course content (such as online videos) challenging. If you're located in a country where this might be an issue, we will contact you personally to provide you with individualised guidance on how to maximise your learning experience irrespective of your location.
Q: How do I join the class live?
A: At the beginning of the trimester, your lecturer will post as a Subject Announcement a link to your live webinar each week. The webinar will be held via Zoom, which is the world’s most reliable web conferencing platform. The unique link for each class will remain the same for every week of the trimester.
Q: Where do I find the Subject Announcements?
A: On MyKBS. When you log on, you need to visit your subject’s webpage. There are several ways this can be done. The easiest way is to select the ‘My Subjects’ dropdown option from the main menu, scroll down to T2 2020 and select your subject code accordingly. You’ll then notice three large icons. The middle one is titled Subject Announcements. Click on that. The most recent posts are located at the top. Find the one that pertains to your most recent class. Even though the link won’t change from week to week, your lecturer will still post it on a weekly basis.
Q: Will classes still run for three hours?
A: In some cases, yes, but in most cases, no. That’s because it can be challenging for students to maintain their concentration when their interactions are held online rather than in person. It is also often faster for lecturers to cover all the material when teaching online than it is when they’re teaching on campus. Irrespective of your class’s duration, we are still committed to providing you with three hours of online instruction each week for every subject. This means that, if your class for a particular week runs for less than three hours, your lecturer will either remain online to meet with students who have any post-class questions or notify the class of when they’ll next be available online to make up for the balance.
Q: Am I able to change my class?
A: Changes to classes are permitted only until the end of Week 1 of the trimester.
Q: How can I participate more actively in an online class?
A: We know it can sometimes be tough to make a contribution in a webinar but there are ways that Zoom makes it easy to do so without feeling as though you’re interrupting. One way is to ask your question or submit your comment via the Chat function. Another is to raise your virtual hand by clicking the icon labelled "Participants" at the bottom of your screen. You’ll then see a button labelled “Raise Hand” towards the bottom-right of your screen. Click on that for your lecturer to notice you have something to say. And of course, if your video is on, you can simply physically raise your hand to capture your lecturer’s attention.
Q: Will online classes be similar to on-campus classes?
A: To a certain extent, yes. We try to keep them as similar as possible. Of course, some activities need to be modified to suit an online learning environment, and many classes will be shorter than three hours, but the curriculum will certainly be identical to what you would have been taught on campus.
Q: Where can I learn more about how to study well online?
A: On the homepage of MyKBS, you’ll find a range of videos to help you succeed in your studies as an online student.
Q: How can I look after myself while studying online?
A: We recommend the following ten principles:
- Ensure your office set-up is ergonomic by adhering to these tips.
- Get enough sleep – a minimum of seven hours per night.
- Be healthy by drinking lots of water and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables.
- Take regular breaks by standing, walking and stretching.
- Stay fit by exercising, even if it’s just daily walks around the block.
- Create a space, where possible, that’s quiet and which attracts natural light.
- Remain connected with your peers, both in Australia and overseas.
- Meditate, breathe deeply, and practice relaxation techniques.
- Reward yourself when you achieve every success goal you set for yourself.
- Make use of KBS’s many support services such as our Academic Success Centre, one-on-one tutors and counsellors.
Q: What’s Zoom?
A: Zoom is very similar to Skype. It’s one of the world’s most popular – and easiest to use – web conferencing platforms. On the Subject Announcements section of your subject page on MyKBS, your lecturer will post the URL for the weekly online lectures. All you need to do is click on the link (or copy and paste it into your browser) at your class’s scheduled time to access the live webinar. You do not need to set up a Zoom account to access the weekly webinars.
Q: How do I know which Zoom link to select?
A: There are two types of Zoom links. One is for your live class. The other is for the recording of a class. The title of the Subject Announcement, and especially the body of the announcement, will specify the difference between each link.
Q: Do I require a Zoom account to access the online classes?
A: No, you do not need a Zoom account. Simply click on the appropriate link via the Subject Announcement.
Q: What happens if the internet is disconnected during the webinar?
A: If it’s your internet that has been disconnected, try shutting down your devices, including your modem, and reboot. If it’s your lecturer’s internet that has been disconnected, please be patient. It may take a few minutes for them to reboot. If their challenges persist, they will notify you via a Subject Announcement (which you also receive via email) of an alternative time the class will be held that week.
Q: How do I access the prescribed texts?
A: You will no longer need to access prescribed texts because we’ll be replacing all of them with alternative resources. Your lecturer and subject coordinator will be updating these on a weekly basis so please pay attention to MyKBS, and particularly the Subject Announcements, so that you remain ahead in your studies.
Q: How can I borrow library books?
A: Currently our on-campus libraries are closed. We are continuing to monitor restrictions and will open our libraries as soon as it’s safe to do so. Meanwhile, we have now significantly expanded our online library with dozens of new journal subscriptions, including the Harvard Business Collection which gives you access to more than 600 newly published e-books written by academics and business leaders.
Q: Can I access Microsoft Office as a KBS student?
A: Yes, you can. Follow these simple steps to log in:

Q: When do I attend my class online?
A: In Feedback Week we announced that all Online classes will now have a designated time when you are enrolling in them. You are now able to see if this class time clashes with any other classes. All class times on KHUB are in AEST, so if you are based in Adelaide or Perth make sure you account for the time difference.
If you’re unsure about the timing of your class, please check your timetable at the bottom of the homepage on KHUB or ask one of our Student Experience Officers who will confirm that for you promptly.
Q: Will attendance be recorded for online classes?
A: Yes, attendance will be recorded by your lecturer. When you join your online class, please begin by entering your Student ID into the Chat function. This will ensure your student file is updated with your accurate rate of attendance.
Q: Do I have to attend every class?
A: Our expectation is that, yes, you must attend every class. Missing out on even one class risks creating a significant gap in knowledge, thereby making it difficult to catch up. Our analyses show there is a strong correlation between attendance and successful student outcomes, and for example, students who attend less than 60% of their classes have a much greater chance of failing their subject.
Q: How am I able to attend every class if I’m overseas and unable to return to Australia?
A: When choosing your subjects for Trimester 2, select a subject that accounts for the time-zone differences. Alternatively, inform your lecturer of this challenging circumstance and make certain you attentively watch the recording of each week’s class.
Q: What happens if my class falls on a public holiday?
A: KBS lecturers are located in all 5 states where we have campuses. If you lecturer is located in a state where this a public holiday, then this class we be reschedule for some other time. Where possible, we will endeavour to give you a week’s notice in these instances.
Q: How can I perform better in subjects that have participation marks as an assessment?
A: Participating in class is important not just because there are sometimes marks attached but also because it is a critical way for you to enrich your learning experience. We therefore recommend all students adopt these techniques:
- Prepare for class by engaging with the readings and resources beforehand.
- Use this to help you think of questions and comments you can put forward.
- Pay attention in the class to more easily identify opportunities to contribute.
- Answer questions in class. It doesn’t matter if your answer is incorrect.
- Practice how to project your voice so that your confidence builds over time.
- Observe how high-performing students participate in class. Emulate them.
Q: How will in-class assessments be held?
A: All in-class assessments will be modified to suit an online learning environment. Participation marks, for example, will continue since your lecturer will be able to easily determine via your video the extent to which you’re contributing to your online class. Presentations will likewise continue as normal, except they will now be delivered during the webinar rather than in the physical classroom. In-trimester quizzes and tests will migrate to online platforms, and group exercises, too, can be facilitated online via Zoom’s breakout rooms. Similarly, tasks such as reflective journals (in fact, any individualised writing activity) can be completed online simply by ensuring your webcam is activated so your lecture can remain assured of academic integrity. Any in-class assessments that aren’t easily transferrable to the online method have been replaced by alternative assessment types.
Q: How can I seek assistance on this trimester’s assessments?
A: The most straightforward way is to ask your lecturer, either during your online class or afterwards via email. This trimester we’ll also be hosting webinars for the three biggest assessments for every subject. The purpose of these bonus webinars will be to give you clarity on how to succeed and to answer any questions you have about our grading expectations. If you can’t attend these webinars live, you’ll be able to access the recording afterwards.
Q: How will final exams be conducted?
A: Final exams for online classes will be held online. They will still be invigilated. You will be provided with further information on how to do this closer to the exam period. You will also be required to have your video on for the duration of the exam since multiple invigilators will be present. Our advice is to think of a quiet place from now where you’ll be able to complete your exam with minimal interruptions and limited background noise.
Q: What happens if I fail a subject this trimester?
A: : In recognition that the pressures you’re facing in your personal life have the potential to impact your studies, we will not let you fail if you make a concerted effort throughout the trimester. Your effort will be determined by three factors. The first is whether you’ve submitted every assessment in the subject. The second is whether your final grade is between 30% and 49%. The third is whether you have zero instances of academic misconduct recorded for that specific trimester. Upon meeting all three conditions, we will provide you with two options to choose from. One of these will be the opportunity to sit a supplementary assessment, thereby giving you a final opportunity to pass. The other will be to opt for a Withdrawn Not Fail (WNF) grade which means your Grade Point Average (GPA) will not be negatively impacted and your transcript will not show you have failed the subject. Of course, if the subject is core in your course, you will need to reattempt it in a future trimester.
Q: How can I catch up if I don’t attend the live class?
A: You can watch the recording, which will be made available by Friday afternoon via your Subject Announcements page.
Q: Will my specific class be recorded?
A: We will record just one class per subject. That’s because, for many subjects, we’re running up to 27 classes to maintain our personalised support, which is clearly too numerous to post as recordings. For that reason, we’ve selected just one class we feel would be especially valuable for all students to hear, enabling you to have the theories and concepts explained by more than just your own lecturer, thereby enriching your learning experience.
Q: How do I access the recording?
A: It will be posted on Friday afternoon as a Subject Announcement for all students enrolled in your subject – not just those enrolled in your class.
Q: Will I still be able to access KBS’s support services?
A: Absolutely. All of your trusted support personnel will be available to help you succeed in your studies. During Trimester 2, all our campuses with the exception of Melbourne will be open Monday to Friday, with support staff available to meet all students on-campus. As many students will still be studying online for Trimester 2, we are continuing to offer our online support options such as the KHUB Live Chat service.
Q: What support services are available to me if I’m concerned about COVID-19?
A: There are several support services we make available to all students that we encourage you to engage with if you are concerned. These include:
- Your local Student Experience team, the members of which are dedicated to supporting you throughout your studies.
- Every campus has at least one counsellor available for a confidential conversation in person, over the phone, or online. Please visit MyKBS to make a booking. All sessions with a counsellor are confidential and do not impact your academic outcomes in any way. In fact, we find they’re an especially effective way of improving your academic success.
- We have also partnered with Sonder, a 24/7 personal safety and wellbeing service available via phone and live chat, with in-person assistance if you need it. Sonder is fully funded by Kaplan, which means you're eligible to benefit from its services at no cost. These services are especially useful as the situation with COVID-19 evolves. We therefore strongly encourage you to download the app today so that you’re ready to access their services whenever you need them. Q: How can I make an appointment with the Academic Success Centre?
